Transmission Log Episode 12: System76 New Computer, COSMIC DE and Halloween Sale

I really want ARM64 freedom. Finally System76 has an ARM64 offering!

Starting 2025 new servers will be ARM64 in my data center. System76 has Starling ARM Servers offerings. I use Dell primarily, but they still don’t have ARM which is a shame as they will take a lot less power to run and deliver much better performance.

Hey Greg!
Yeah I’m a huge fan of arm64 myself, ever since apple came out with the M series chips there’s been a huge load of progress in the space.

I’m using an Arm64 instance for my Postgres DB at work and will be migrating the nodes in my k8s cluster to be arm64 soon!

ARM64 is the future. For me I’m off Apple and on Pop!_OS primarily. Apple is definitely ahead but it looks like there will be ARM options on the desktop soon. We plan on going with ARM servers next year and deprecating all our intel/amd servers.

The performance and energy efficiency is quite good, even AWS is pushing their ARM services.

I see you are using null.ie for email (icloud) – great domain!

Yeah Arm64 is definitely the future for 90% of workloads, basically most things we do day to day are perfectly fine running on smaller Arm64 instances.

I’m working for a medical device startup at the moment and am working towards having every instance of cloud compute be Arm64, I already have our DB instances and every EC2 that’s needed barring the kubernetes nodes, that’s the last step.

I’ve also recently bought myself a pi zero 2 w with an e-ink screen that I need to get stuck into and planning on buying a pi 5 for some home stuff (I bought a house!) like pi-hole and also I need an RF hat to control our blinds!

Yeah I love this domain, I love the look on people’s faces when I say it to them to enter into some system and they ask “are you sure that will work” :joy::joy:

I took the lazy hosting option though, I used iCloud

I have a Mac Studio, it’s impressive with performance vs energy consumption. Moving to Pop!_OS hasn’t been easy as I was so used to Mac. But looking back after about 5 months I’ll never go back. With Linux there is freedom and with Cosmic-DE I see a lot more innovation happening. Also with Rust I’ve left Java behind and really been enjoying developing a lot lately. System76 feels like what Apple did in 2007 forward with the momentum of making Linux better. Cosmic-DE is a gamechanger.

With ARM options now becoming an option with Linux desktop and server it’s making me very happy. Here is a list of Linux Software I’ve been compiling that I use daily.
