Been usion Pop!_OS Cosmic Alpha on a laptop for testing. I really need 24.04 LTS as it’s easier for development libraries I need. I’ve used a lot of other Linux flavors and desktops over the years, this is my final goto, it just works. Really looking forward to Cosmic themes, especially Nord if someone does it — if not I’ll have to take a crack at it.
Garuda Linux has some really cool themes and have themed Pop!_OS Cosmic.
You got one of their laptops as well didn’t you? Which one? I’m ready to make the change, all these law changes that invade your privacy that will definitely be passed has pushed me over the edge
Processor: AMD® Ryzen 7 7735u with radeon graphics × 16
Graphics: AMD® Radeon graphics
Disk Capacity: 2.0 TB (1 NVMe)
I use Cosmic DE on the Pangolin-13 for testing. The Pangolin-15 is closer to the Macbook build, more durable. I beat both of these things up everyday and not had any issues. You won’t get the battery life like the Macbook, but I like that it has actual full USB ports. The Pangolin-15 I use a USB-C dongle for 2.5GB networking but does have a 1GB network jack. As for the desktop, it is hammered 24x7 on encoding AV1, development during the day.
Only gripe I still have is the fingerprint reader. That was handy on the Mac, both laptops have the sensor and you can spend time getting it to work, but it’s not usable out of the box with Pop!_OS at the moment. I hope they do something about that in the future. What I do is Bitwarden with Passkey and Yubico, SoloKeys.
System 76 keyboards I find the best, for me anyways. They are metal, heavy quality builds. I have all 3, using the Launch Heavy for desktop, Launch for laptop and the Launch Lite for data center server stuff as it moves around a lot. Mouse is a Logitich MX Master 3S.
Moving to Linux took some time in regards to desktop and apps, but after I did can’t go back to anything else. I’m not going to go into my drama of using the others as I’ve let those behind and my life is better – Freedom.
I like the look of the pangolin, but the 16 inch is a bit big for what I’m looking for and the 13 you linked doesn’t seem to be available anymore.
I was looking at the lemur 14 inch, seems to be what I would want, something a bit more portable.
I would be ok without a finger print reader, I primarily have my laptop closed and use external monitors. It’s a nice convenience, but no big deal. I’m a yubikey user myself.
The keyboards look nice, I’ve primarily been using a keychron k8 which I’m a big fan of. I tested using a lower profile nuphy air 75 v2 and it was great, but it does not come in ISO layout and I didn’t realize how much I preferred that until I used this I may give the system76 ones a look for this, also considering a keychron one as I have had such a good experience with my current.(I also say the nuphy air 75 v3 supports ISO layout and may give that another go as the v2 is very nice).
Been using the MX master 3 for a long time now myself, so long the grip is starting to flake off a bit, I’m due a replacement soon.
I’ve been looking at tuxedo also, the I infinity book pro looks very nice
The Lemur looks good. The hardware options for Linux are getting better and I can deal with a few qwerks and they improve.
With ARM64 already on the desktop with Ubuntu and future Pop!_OS I’m sure that will be in the near future. I did try the latest Ubuntu Desktop, but I found myself always back to Pop!_OS as things just worked better without messing about with getting things to work.
Great thing about the current laptops for Linux, you can load anything on them. I think you will be impressed with the System 76 Launch keboards, I use the Pinks Silent and couldn’t be happier.
